'My practice as an artist is driven by a desire to explore what lies beneath the surface, the quiet space between light and shadow, presence and absence, the seen and the felt. I work slowly and intuitively, allowing each piece to develop in its own time. Through building, scraping back, and etching into layers, the work gathers depth, memory, and meaning. Painting, for me, is less about speed and more about listening, to materials, to memory, and to what wants to emerge.' Based in Kāpiti, New Zealand, Cam's richly layered mixed media paintings evoke the textures, symbols, and mysteries of ancient landscapes. Over three decades, she has developed a distinctive practice exploring time, memory, and human presence through abstract forms and tactile surfaces. Drawing inspiration from prehistoric sites, spiritual traces, and ancient markings, Munroe creates works that feel both historic and strangely familiar. Her motifs act like contemporary hieroglyphs. Using acrylic, ink, and oil, she builds and erodes her compositions with impasto, wire brushes, and sandpaper, revealing weathered, resonant forms. Originally from Australia, Munroe studied fine arts in Sydney before relocating to New Zealand in 1994. A finalist in awards such as the Parkin Drawing Prize, the Molly Morpeth Canaday Awards, the COCA Anthony Harper Award, the Craigs Aspiring Art Awards, the NZ Printmaking and Painting Awards, and the Walker and Hall Waiheke Art Awards. Her work is held in both public and private collections across New Zealand and internationally, including the Wallace Arts Trust. Her work is held in public and private collections in New Zealand and internationally. 'I greatly value the support of galleries that offer thoughtful curation and space for the work to be fully realised, as well as the collectors who choose to live with these pieces and give them an ongoing life beyond the studio. This support is sincerely appreciated.' |
